Changing an address on your Driving Licence?

Have you recently moved house or got married? It’s essential to make sure you inform the DVLA of any change to your name or address as soon as possible. You can go online to update your driving licence details or inform the DVLA by post.

Why is it important to update the address on your driving licence

Did you know that 1.5 million drivers in the UK have incorrect details on their driving licence?

Your driving licence is a legal document, which means it needs to be kept up to date whenever your details change. Updates can include a name change (for instance, if you get married and take your partner’s surname) and a change of address.

If you fail to update your address when you move house, you could be at risk of a fine. Even if your new accommodation will be temporary (university halls, for example) you need to inform the DVLA. If your vehicle is caught committing an offence such as speeding, the notice will go to the address listed on your licence. Incorrect details may lead to you missing the notice and therefore not complying with it. This can result in prosecution and 6 points on your licence.

Informing the DVLA of any changes will make sure your record is up to date and all future driving licence reminders are sent to your correct address.

It’s worth noting that UK driving licence checks are different in Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.

Changing your address and/or the name on your driving licence

Moving house can be a stressful time, and certain tasks, like amending your driving licence address can fall off the radar. The good news is that it’s quick and simple to check and amend the address on your driving licence online.

If you need to update your name, title, or gender, however, you’ll need to amend the licence by post. You’ll also need to get in touch by post if you want to change your address and name at the same time.

Are you unsure whether your address needs updating? We can carry out a driving licence check online for you.

What about renewing or replacing your driving licence?

Another important area to keep on top of is when your driving licence needs renewing. This is something you can do online. You’ll need a valid UK passport to do so and can also renew your driving licence photo online if this needs updating.

If any part of your licence has been lost or stolen, you’ll need to replace your driving licence, ensuring you notify DVLA of any changes if any apply.

Using the Post Office licence services

If you’d rather, you can update your driving licence details by getting a form from a local Post Office branch. Just make sure they offer driving licence services by using the Post Office Branch finder and checking what they offer. You can return your form to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DH.

Is it quicker to update your driving licence online or by post?

In general, it’s quicker to update your driving licence online. You can expect to receive your new licence within a week, however, it may take slightly longer if the DVLA needs to check any of the details of your application.

If you update your driving licence details by post, it can take around 3 weeks to receive your new licence.

Can you drive without a physical licence?

If you’re waiting to receive a new driving licence, you may still drive without a physical licence in your possession so long as you’re not disqualified from driving, or have been refused a licence for medical reasons.
